Different Types of Table Games

Different Types of Table Games

Did you know the gambling industry is responsible for contributing about $137.5 billion to America’s economy every year and employs more than 730,000 people in the country? In fact, the world’s gambling market is expected to reach $511 billion in revenue by 2019.

While those numbers are indeed impressive, they only discuss gambling as a business. Although some people carve out livings as professional gamblers, the real objective of gambling in a casino is to have fun. Win, lose or draw, having fun while playing games in an opulent, friendly environment is what Dover Downs Hotel & Casino is all about.

Upon visiting our gorgeous property and entering our welcoming casino, many of our visitors are immediately drawn to our 2300 slot machines. With vibrant colors, exciting sounds and bright lights, it is no wonder why so many of our guests want to play our slot machines.

Out of all the casino games, slots and video poker are the most popular, with 61 percent of all casino visitors trying their hand at these games. While slots and video poker are the games of choice for many casino visitors, the remaining four out of the top five casino games are table games.

Blackjack is the 2nd most popular casino game.

Blackjack is the second most popular casino game, with about 19 percent of all casino visitors taking a seat at a blackjack table. Roulette, poker and craps are the third, fourth and fifth most popular casino games, respectively.

Table Games at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino

Just like we have plenty of slot machines, Dover Downs Hotel & Casino is where you will find a generous assortment of fun-filled table games. In fact, we have 41 tables in our inviting casino. When you visit the first floor of our casino, you will see three tables dedicated to craps, four roulette tables and 33 card games.

Over the years, we have heard people say table games can be intimidating if you do not know how to play them. While that is understandable, we want you to know we have some of the friendliest dealers at our establishment who will be happy to help you learn the game you want to play. If you take a seat at a table during a slower period, such as the afternoon, you may even enjoy a one-on-one tutorial as you try your hand at a game that is new to you.

Remember – while you may want to win the jackpot, the real point of casino table games is to have fun in a relaxed, comfortable environment like ours. One way you can enhance your experience at our location is to gain a basic familiarity with our table games. With that in mind, we put together brief descriptions for 12 of our casino table games that will help you feel comfortable no matter which you decide to play.

1. Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the simplest games to play in any casino, and that is certainly the case at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. Unlike poker, where you compete against other players, your sole opponent in blackjack is the dealer. Your goal is to draw cards that total 21 or come closer to that number than the dealer’s hand.

In blackjack, every card except face cards and aces is worth the same as the number on the card. A six of clubs has a value of six, for example. All face cards are worth 10, while aces can be worth either one or 11, which is up to a player to decide.

To start, the dealer deals two cards face up to each player. The dealer also gets two cards, one face up and a hole card that is face down. The dealer will not turn over their hole card until every player acts on their hand.

When it is your turn to play, you will have two options:

  • Stand: Take no more cards
  • Hit: Receive an additional card

You can continue to hit until you reach 21, or “bust” by going over.Hand signals are typically used to indicate what you want to do. To hit, tap the table with one of your fingers. To stand, wave your hand side to side over your cards with your palm down.

Hand signals are typically used to indicate what you want to do.

When each player is done playing their hand, it is the dealer’s turn to act. At this point, the dealer will turn over their hole card and react according to the rules of the casino. In general, a dealer has to draw on scores up to 16 and stand when their hand hits 17 or higher.

After the dealer plays their hand, the results of your hand will be compared to theirs. If your cards total the same number as the dealer’s, the hand is a “push,” which means no one wins. If your hand equals more than the dealer’s without exceeding 21 or the dealer breaks, congratulations – you win.

The best hand you can get in blackjack is an ace and a 10 or face card. If you are dealt such a hand, your dealer will refer to your hand as blackjack. If the dealer’s up card is not an ace or a card that has a value of 10, you will be paid before the dealer even reveals their hole card. If your dealer’s hand is also blackjack, it is still a push, and you will not get paid.

While knowing how and when to hit and stand is enough for you to take a seat at a blackjack table confidently, you can make more advanced moves. Splitting and resplitting pairs, doubling down and getting insurance are some of the additional moves you can make. The best way to learn when these moves are advisable is to observe experienced players as they play blackjack.

One thing you will never see as you watch a game of blackjack is players handling their cards. Touching your cards is not just one way for you to look inexperienced, it is an invitation for you to be asked to leave the table. No matter what table game you are playing, if you are unsure about whether it is okay to handle your cards, assume you must keep your hands to yourself or ask your dealer what the protocol is.

If you're unsure if you can touch your cards, ask your dealer.

2. Craps

Craps is a highly social game in which players often share the same risks, rewards and losses as a group. Because your fate is often entwined with the outcomes of your tablemates, players enjoy a strong sense of camaraderie that is not typically present at other casino games.

While a craps table may seem confusing at first glance, it is effortless to interpret if you study the table and observe a craps game for a little bit. You will quickly realize there is no way to place an incorrect bet as you play, although every player can place bets that end up losing.

Because you cannot place a wrong bet in craps, developing a familiarity with the game is less about learning the rules than it is about learning the things you should avoid doing at the table. Here are some of the things you should not do as you play craps:

  • Pass Your Turn as the Shooter Multiple Times: The first and possibly most important thing you should refrain from doing is passing your turn as the shooter more than once. While you have the right to pass your turn as often as you want to, doing so more than one time per playing session is widely considered bad form.
  • Not Tipping Your Dealer When You Are Losing: Even if you do not win on a single throw of the dice, you should still tip your dealer. As a general rule, it is advisable to give your dealer a tip every hour or so if you are losing.
  • Eating or Drinking at the Rail: Craps is an active game in which someone throws dice every round, people cheer and clap, and some celebrate or mourn by throwing their arms up in the air in a group gesture. With so much physical activity going on near a typical craps table, you should avoid eating or drinking at the rail, where your plate or glass can easily be knocked onto the playing surface and ruin the fun.
  • Cheering Against the Shooter: Even if you bet against the shooter, you should refrain from cheering against the person if you want to feel welcome at the table.

3. Roulette

If you are new to casino or table games, roulette is one you can pick up quickly. Despite the rapid play, or perhaps because of the fast action, it will not take you long to learn how to play roulette like an experienced gambler.

The goal of roulette is to pick the winning number.

The goal for roulette players is simple – pick the winning number on the roulette wheel on every spin. You can bet on single numbers, a series of adjoining numbers, a color or whether a turn will produce an odd or even outcome. No matter what bet you want to place, it is your responsibility to put your chips in the right location.

At the start of every round, your dealers will spin the roulette wheel in one direction and a small white ball in the other direction. Even after the dealer turns the wheel and the ball, you can continue to bet until the dealer says, “No more bets.”

The ball will eventually come to rest on a winning number. When this happens, the dealer will place a marker on the figure. Losing wagers will then be cleared, and winning bets will be paid off. It is vital to avoid touching the table while the dealer is paying off winning wagers. You must wait until your dealer instructs you and your fellow gamblers to place your bets to touch the table again. In roulette, you will determine the value of your chips when you buy into the game. The amount of each of your chips will be indicated by a marker located on top of a chip that has the same color as your chip stack. Since every player will have different colored chip stacks, it is easy for a dealer and players to know which chips belong to which players.

As with other games of chance, there is no strategy to help you gain an advantage in roulette. While some players may think red is “hot,” or certain numbers are “cold,” every spin of the wheel is entirely independent of the ones that preceded it and those that will follow.

Manage your bank roll wisely to enjoy playing longer.

Although no strategy can help you win more in roulette, there is a strategy that can help you enjoy the game longer: Manage your bankroll wisely.

4. Baccarat

While some people think baccarat is a game reserved for high rollers, that is not the case. Baccarat is a game people with all kinds of paychecks can enjoy at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

Baccarat is fun and very easy to play thanks to the limited number of decisions players have to make. You only have two decisions to make when you play baccarat: how much you want to wager and whether you are betting on the bank or the player.

As you gain experience as a baccarat player, you may want to wager on the tie. Placing this kind of bet means you are wagering on the banker’s and player’s hands ending up with the same numerical value at the end of the game.

In baccarat, every card counts as its face value, meaning a seven of any suit has a value a seven and so on, except for tens. All tens and face cards have a value of zero, with aces having a value of one.

Unless you place a tie bet, the goal is to bet on the hand that ends up with a value that is closest to nine at the end of the play. If the banker’s and player’s hands end up with the same totals, neither hand is a winner or a loser.

5. Pai Gow Poker

If you know how to play poker, you already know the basics of Pai Gow Poker. This fun-filled game combines Pai Gow, an ancient game that originated in China, with American poker. While a 52-card deck is used in Pai Gow Poker, the playing deck will have a total of 53 cards with the addition of a joker. You can only use the joker as an ace or to make a straight, flush, straight flush or royal flush.

Every player plays two hands in each round, with each hand having the same value it would in conventional poker. You will be dealt seven cards per round and make two hands, a two-card hand and a five-card hand. The value of your five-card hand must be equal to or higher than your two-card hand.

The goal of Pai Gow Poker is to end up with hands that outrank your opponents’. If both your hands outrank your opponents’ hands, you win. If one of your hands has the same rank as one of your opponent’s hands, it is a tie, and the banker wins. If one of your hands prevails, but the other loses to a competitor, it is a push, and no one wins or loses any money.

6. Three-Card Poker

If you love poker, it is likely that three-card poker will become one of your favorite table games. A relatively new variant of poker, three-card poker is essentially two exciting games in one. It combines pair plus with three card ante, which is also known as three-card play.

Try three card poker.

Just like you decide whether you are going to play pair plus in a round, you also choose whether to continue in a hand after you get your three cards. If you continue, you will place a wager that is equal to or more than your original ante.

If your dealer’s hand is not better than queen high, players win even money on their wagers. Players holding a straight or better win an ante bonus, too. Players who beat the dealer’s hand win both bets and earn an ante bonus if one is available.

Winning Poker Hands

In descending order of rank, winning hands in three-card poker are as follows:

  • Straight flush
  • Three of a kind
  • Straight
  • Flush
  • High card

7. Spanish 21

Spanish 21 is a highly engaging game similar to blackjack. The primary difference between the two games is that the tens are removed from the deck in Spanish 21.

The goal of Spanish 21 is the same as in blackjack. You aim to have a hand closer to 21 than your dealer’s, without going over 21. If you draw a 21, you will be an automatic winner in Spanish 21 – in this game, a dealer’s hand cannot tie with a player’s hand as it might in blackjack. As in blackjack, you can stand, hit, double down and split pairs in Spanish 21.

8. High Card Flush With Progressive Jackpot

All you have to do to win in this exciting game is make a flush. That is, you have to make a flush higher than your dealer’s if they also end up with a flush of their own.

If your hand consists of a four-card flush, a three-card straight flush or better, you will get paid if you beat the dealer’s hand. The better your flush or straight flush is, the more your payout will be. In addition to betting in the pot, you can place another wager for a chance to win a progressive bonus.

9. 21+3 With Progressive Jackpot

If you plan to play blackjack when you visit Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, you will love knowing we have 21+3 with a progressive jackpot at our location. With this game, you can get a little extra action on the bets you make as you play blackjack.

If you decide to go for some additional action on your blackjack wagers, you need to place your 21+3 bet before a round of play begins. To determine if your 21+3 bet is a winner, look at your hand along with the dealer’s up card. If those three cards combine to make a hand that is the equivalent of three of a kind or better, you will be paid nine to one.

10. Dragon Bonus

Just like 21+3 is another way to get some action on the bets you make in blackjack, dragon bonus is an additional bet you can make to increase your winnings as you play Baccarat. Win with a natural and you will earn even money on your dragon bonus bet. Win with a non-natural, and you can make even more, depending how many points you win by.

11. WPT Heads Up Hold’em With Progressive Jackpot

Even if you only play poker in casual home games, you know there is not much better than playing heads up against a worthy opponent. You can do just that hand after hand at a WPT Heads Up Hold’em table.

A worthy opponent makes it more fun.

To start, you will put up your ante and make any side wagers that appeal to you. You will then get two cards and have the option to check or raise as much as three times your ante. Once the flop is dealt, you can check or raise after you determine how the three community cards improve your hand, assuming they do.

The dealer will then deal the turn, and you will once again have the chance to raise. The river is the final card dealt in WPT Heads Up Hold’em. If you last until showdown, all you have to do is have a hand better than your dealer’s, and you will be a winner.

Showdown with the dealer.

A five-card progressive jackpot is part of our WPT Heads Up Hold’em game. Winning a piece of the prize is based on your hole cards and the initial three community cards. The progressive jackpot will see action regardless of whether you fold your hand. You will win if your hole cards and the flop combine to make a full house or better.

12. Cajun Stud
