Blackjack Decisions Glossary

A turn in blackjack requires you to make a “decision” about the play you want to make. Here is a quick guide to blackjack decisions and their terminology:

  • Hit: Ask the dealer to “hit” you when you want another card.
  • Stand: When you do not want to take any more cards, tell the dealer you will “stand” (or “stick” or “stay”).
  • Double down: Doubling down gives you the chance to double the amount of money you can earn with a winning hand. When you double down, you agree to take one more card and then stay. When you do this, your wager is doubled. At that time, other players on the table will have the option of staying or doubling their wager as well.
  • Split: If you are dealt a pair in your first two cards, you have the option of “splitting.” Splitting your cards means creating a second hand that is played simultaneously. This gives you an additional chance to win. When you split your cards, you also double your bet.
  • Insurance: Players can make an “insurance” bet when the dealer’s upcard is an ace. An insurance bet is a side wager where the player can keep their money if the dealer is concealing a blackjack. If the card the dealer has concealed is a 10, the player wins double their bet amount. If the card facing down is less than 10, the bet is lost and play resumes. Insurance bets are equal to half the player’s initial wager.
  • Surrender: Players can surrender their hand after the cards have been dealt, and the dealer has checked for blackjack. Surrendering allows a player to leave with half their initial bet but no further losses.
