How to Play Craps
Bettors wager on the outcome of the roll of a pair of dice, thrown across a long, marked table.
The person who rolls the dice is called the shooter. All Players bet on the outcome of the shooter’s rolls; Players may bet with the shooter or against the shooter. Players wager on the first roll, called the come-out, by placing chips on the PASS or the DON’T PASS bar.
Players who place chips on the PASS bar are betting that the shooter will win. A winning craps come-out roll equals a total of 7 or 11. A PASS LINE bet loses if the shooter tosses a 2, 3 or 12 – this is called “craps.”
Players who place chips on the DON’T PASS bar are betting that the shooter will lose. When the shooter throws a 2 or a 3, all DON’T PASS bets win; 7 or 11 rolls mean DON’T PASS bets lose. If the shooter tosses a 12, neither PASS nor DON’T PASS bets win.
If the shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, the number becomes the “point.” The dealer marks the point on the table with a puck. If the shooter makes the point on the next roll before rolling a 7, PASS LINE bets win while DON’T PASS bets lose. After this “pass,” a new game begins with a brand new roll.
If the shooter rolls a 7 after establishing a point the shooter’s turn ends. PASS LINE bets lose and DON’T PASS bets win. DON’T PASS bettors may remove their bets at any time.
Craps offers 3, 4 and 5 times the odds offered. Four and 10 mean a 3x flat bet. Five and 9 mean a 4x flat bet. A 6 and 8 offers a 5x flat bet.
More Craps Bets
Players can bet that the shooter will throw a certain number before he rolls a 7. They can also make a one roll bet, which is placed on the “Any Craps” section of the table. All-day hardway bets wager that the shooter will throw a matching pair of 2 through 5 before he throws a non-matching combination that totals 4, 6, 8 or 10.
Big Six and Big Eight bets wager that the shooter will throw those totals before he throws a 7. A one-roll field bet wagers that the shooter will throw a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 next. Each special bet pays different odds.
